Mission Statement

The Baldivis Basketball Club is a not for profit organisation, run by volunteers, that provides a basketball program for boys and girls of all skill levels. The club was created due to a need within our community for our young people to have access to sporting teams. We endeavour to support not only their physical health, but also their social and emotional wellbeing. Through team sports, children are provided the opportunity for important lessons in personal values.

Players learn that things aren't going to go their way all the time, and that they need to respect their peers as well as referees and sports officials. These experiences can influence them throughout their lives such as when it comes to working for a boss or respecting the police or other authority figures.

Team sports can also be good for a child's mental health. Children who play team sports learn how to be more resilient when presented with a setback and are less likely to feel isolated.

When your child takes part in team sports they may develop:

⮚       friendship and camaraderie

⮚       cooperation and teamwork skills

⮚       leadership skills

⮚       appreciation of different abilities

⮚       respect for teammates/ opponents/officials

⮚       a sense of belonging/team membership

⮚       social interaction skills

⮚       physical skills

⮚       self-esteem and self-concept

⮚       team goal-setting skills

⮚       self-discipline, patience and persistence

⮚       resilience from the sharing of positive and negative experiences

The Baldivis Basketball Club's primary objective is to maximise the enjoyment and development of all players. The club aims to provide a team for any individual regardless of sporting ability. It is paramount the players receive coaching in a nurturing and positive environment, which provides the player and family with a positive experience.

Team Ethos

We will assist our players to achieve personal success in a safe and supportive environment. We will act with integrity both on and off the court. We will value the efforts of all officials, coaches, managers and volunteers.

Winning Games

Winning is not the primary objective of the club. The club considers winning as a potential outcome that stems from the development of the individual, the team and their coach/manager.

Mercy Rule

As a club, we encourage our coaches to engage the Mercy Rule as appropriate.  As a general rule, once a team is winning by upward of 20 points, coaches are encouraged to press their team to half court / give weaker players more court time / zone defence (rather than man on man) / instigate 5-10 passes before shooting.

This allows the winning and losing team a chance to develop further skills on court, and ensures the weaker team is not demoralised when losing by very large margins. This rule should especially be applied when playing inter BBC teams, as a club we promote the development of all our players.

Spirit of the Game

The club aims to field competitive sides with players who display a healthy competitive spirit. This spirit is defined as trying ones best while displaying respect and tolerance for others including umpires, opposition, officials and our teammates.

Coaches as Leaders

Coaches as leaders are, above all, required to model the behaviour and attitudes outlined in the spirit of the game. All coaches are committed to the clubs no tolerance stance on racial or religious slurs and bullying.

Development of the Individual

Considering the physical maturity, skill level and game sense of the player, coaches will aim to support payers in the following areas:

-          Development of skills

-          Development and knowledge of team play and tactics within the games

-          Increased knowledge of positional play

-          Nurture and develop decision making ability through game related training exercises

-          Foster personal development including leadership, self-esteem and social skills

Game Time Policy

To assist players in their development coaches will give the opportunity for players to practice what they learn at training by ensuring players have a meaningful amount of game time. Coaches discretion will be applied in the case of injury, fatigue, and poor attitude or to players who do not attend training on a regular basis. The first point of contact for enquiries in this regard is your team coach.

Continued Development of Coaches

All coaches are committed to the continued development of their coaching knowledge and methods. The Baldivis Basketball Club is committed to developing its coaching volunteers and as such will assist financially toward their development where financially viable.

Positive Interaction

When instructing players, the use of fear or humiliation is not only inappropriate it is unlikely to be effective. Coaches will always instruct and intervene in a positive and encouraging way. It is the coach’s responsibility to provide a solution for the player or work with a player to find a solution. If the coach is unable to find a solution, he / she should approach the coach liaison in the first instance. If a solution can still not be found the coach should approach the Baldivis Basketball Club Executive Committee.

Injury Prevention and Safety

The Baldivis Basketball Club view player safety as paramount. It is the responsibility of the coaching and management team to:

-          Make sure the grounds are checked for possible dangers before play (i.e. slip hazards)

-          Players are wearing appropriate protective equipment i.e. mouth guards

-          Players remove all jewellery

-          Players are monitored for fatigue and rested where necessary

-          Appropriate medical attention in rendered as a priority should an injury occur

-          No child is subjected to physical or verbal abuse from any player, parent or spectator.

Respect the Rules

It is expected that all players and spectators will follow the “Code of Behaviour Policy” and “Spectator Behaviour Policy” of the Rockingham Basketball and Recreation Association.  A copy of these policies can be found at the end of this document, as well as: http://websites.sportstg.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-3186-0-0-0&sID=285942
